Motivational Strategies to Promote Consumer Readiness,

Engagement and Success in Vocational Rehabilitation

January

30-31

Description: Although many VR consumers proceed directly into vocational services leading to employment, there are other VR consumers who have difficulty either getting or staying engaged in the rehabilitation process. The focus of this workshop is to describe approaches that help and support these consumers.

The workshop will provide a conceptual framework for understanding the stages and processes of change, motivation and the dynamics of goal attainment based on the work of Prochaska and DiClemente (Stages of Change Model) and Miller and Rollnick (Motivational Interviewing).

Building on this understanding of motivation and change process, the workshop will focus on specific and practical strategies that rehabilitation counselors can use to engage consumers in a process that promotes informed choice, readiness and active involvement in vocational services and support for sustaining success in employment.

The major topics covered in the workshop include:

  • The Four R's: Recovery, Rehabilitation, Readiness and Resistance.
  • Motivation and the Dynamics of Goal Attainment.
  • Applications of Motivational Interviewing in Vocational Rehabilitation.
  • Transitions and Crises in the Rehabilitation Process: Helpful Response Strategies.
